Memorial Stone of Otwock’s Jews

Reymonta Street - the interesting objects near the route

On August 30th 1949 Otwock’s mayor, Jan Ślimakowski, on plenary assembly of Town National Council announced the set up of monument, glorifying Otwock’s Jews, murdered by Nazis on August 1942 in Otwock.

The Polish and Jewish inscription on monument says:  The place of execution of 5000 Jews, who died from Nazi, genocidal hands in August 19th 1942.  Lest we forget.   As the time pasted, inscription was getting more readable, however what’s most important – it didn’t accord to historical truth.
The inscription quoted to high amount of victims and wrong date of executions. According to the newest historians’ discoveries, Jews were executed not only on August 19th but also during a couple of weeks after liquidation of ghetto in Otwock.  The real number of victims is actually twice lower.  Previous inscription described this area as a place of executions, whereas it is also massive grave.
Because of these reasons, through actions of Social Committee for the Memory of Otwock’s and Karczew’s Jews,  The Council for the Protection of Struggle and Martyrdom in seventy, tragic annual of extermination of Otwock’s Jews  decided about change of inscription into:

HERE, IN MASSIVE GRAVES, AROUND 2000 OTWOCK’S JEWS REPOSE,
EXECUTED IN THIS PLACE
IN AUGUST AND SEPTEMBER 1942 BY GERMAN OCCUPANT’S.
WE SHALL REMEMBER ABOUT THEIR TRAGEDY,  LIKEWISE ABOUT
ALL MURDERED JEWISH CO-CITIZENS OF OUR TOWN.
CITIZENS OF OTWOCK

The Social Committee for the Memory of Otwock’s and Karczew’s Jews in agreement with The Council for the Protection of Struggle and Martyrdom in August 2012 demarcated the area of national memory, by setting field stones  (similar to the demarcation of Jewish graveyard, also conducted by Committee ) and attaching new memorial sign, with new inscription.
From 2000, the tradition is to celebrate anniversary of liquidation of ghetto (and whole Otwock Jewish community) on August 19th 1942.  Because no day changed the history of our town as much as this.
This is why, every year, on August 19th, at seven o’clock, the celebrations connected with extermination of Otwock Jews begin.
The Social Committee for the Memory of Otwock’s and Karczew’s Jews and the Club of Otwock Friends under the honorable patronage of Otwock president organize March of Memory and Pray, from sideroad to Memorial Stone.  There are common recitations of psalms,  praying and listening of memories at the stone.
